The RedHat Operating System (OS) V6 is running out of life on 31st December 2020. It is the operating system for EUCLID. Thus, it needs to be upgraded by a newer version. This project objective is to lay the foundation to allow automated upgrades of the operating system Redhat. With regards to planned Upgrade of SITS in November 2019 and the start of the term, this project aims to optimize as much as possible until August 2019 and carry out the upgrade.

In Scope:

  • Deciding whether the upgrade will still take place or EUCLID will be moved to Centos 7.0 instead (RedHat Licence is several around 600 GBP per server, information added 02/05/19)
  • Automated process for upgrading RedHat OS in place, tested (incl EUCLID integrators and other components) and documented, so that it can be re-used when doing the RedHat OS upgrade
  • Investigate Java Upgrade and Testing of potential lacks of security

Out of scope

  • Performance Improvement
  • Database Tier

What are the business benefits?

  • By investing in the automated deployment, we will ensure there are fewer interruption of operations, reduced manual errors and costs during the RedHat OS upgrade
  • If the object of improving the automation within this project is successfully tackling the challenges with EUCLID, this foundation will be useful for other infrastructure projects
