Overview

Background

The Oracle HR & Payroll system is required to maintain records for all staff and is used by Human Resources, Payroll and Pensions to administer business functions critical to University Operations.

The aim of this project is to migrate the database for Oracle HR-Payroll to the new database infrastructure to ensure that the database is run and and maintained on a reliable platform that is fully supported and more performant., without losing any of the required functionality. This project will also seek to improve resilience by introducing DataGuard to maintain data across multiple servers and reduce the potential loss of data in the event of an outage.

Scope

The scope of this project can be stated quite simply. It includes the migration of the DEV, TEST and LIVE instances of the HR Payroll database to the new database infrastructure established under ITS100 and the transfer of all related interfaces between other University systems and HR Payroll, as well as the replication of all relevant cron jobs that are run on the latter system. The project will also seek to establish DataGuard on the new instance of the HR Payroll databases in order to improve the failover/DR capabilities of the HR Payroll system.

The scope does not include:

  • The application of any patches or updates not required as pre-requisites for the database migration
  • Converting the character set to WE8ISO8859P15 (See PICCL 3). The recommendation from IS Applications is that the risk of moving to the new character set is too high and that the character set should not be amended as part of the migration. The existing character set remains a supported character set for Oracle HR & Payroll and as such is sufficient to meet system requirements and there is minimal benefit to the risk of migrating to the new character set.
