Assumptions

Reduced need for large disk space.

At present the SATSTAGE package is generating circa 1gb of audit tables each time it runs, in order to accomodate the volume of data generated a 500gb space with 1tb backup space has been allocated to the system.  Both of these spaces could be substaintially reduced if the audit tables size is respectively reduced.

Benefit is based on freeing up 0.5 tb of Diskspace at annual cost of £1,270 per tb.

Reduction in failures of Data Transfer and recovery process (Cost Avoidance)During the start of term 2013/14 the SPDA data transfers failed on multiple occasions.  Every time the transfer fails it requires a member of production staff to restart the transfer, assess the amount of data lost in the failed transfer and re-submit the data lost.  Over the first five weeks of terms roughly 10 days was expended restarting and recoving the data transfer mechanism.  Please note that the transfer mechanism was substaintially reduced in frequency during this time and futher into term it was only run once a week as a coping measure during the recovery process.

Assumptions

Performance improvement to the Live system.

Scientia have confirmed that the amount of data included in the SDB directly impacts performance and reliability of the service.  Eliminating circa 20,000 excess student records and 10,000 excess staff records for the system will have a positive impact on performance.

Timetabling for 2014/15

As the Syllabus Plus Database (SDB) only covers a single academic year, the ideal position is to fix the interfaces before they are required as part of annual roll forward.  By resolving the issues with too much data being presented this will ensure that the 2014/15 database has the best chance of acceptable performance.
