This project will implement the required work to improve the failover of the Learn VLE platform in the event of the loss of the primary server site.  Learn relies on the Data Guard solution manual failover process if access to the primary database is disrupted. In the event of the loss of the whole primary site, manual failover is also required for the Learn file system, and one of the Learn application servers at the second site would also need to be reconfigured to become the primary job server. Any loss of the primary server site outside of core hours, results Learn being down for a significant period. This has a highly disruptive and detrimental effect on our students and their studies.  Learn is a High Priority service with a target up-time of 99.9% (excluding planned maintenance). This work will significantly assist in meeting that up time, and more importantly, meet user needs for a highly available and reliable service. It will provide confidence for our Schools to build further on their use of the VLE platform.  Learn was moved to the new database tier in February 2014 as part of service work as our opportunity for downtime prior to June is very limited. We need to apply service packs to Learn in June / July also and carry out annual roll-over processes. This work will be planned into the existing programme of service work, and a final deployment date will be dependent on the impact and length of outage required on the production infrastructure.
