Overview
Background
The current Oracle database infrastructure for PUBS has reached an age where it is no longer satisfying the demands made of it. ITS100 Implement New Database Tier project has delivered the new infrastructure that can offer better performance, sustainability and resilience. To realise those benefits, IS Applications are now undertaking a series of projects to migrate existing databases from the old database infrastructure to the new one established under project ITS100. This project covers the migration of the PUBS (Publications) database that is the database used by the Records Management Section to monitor information requests and manage the University's publication scheme.
Scope
The scope of this project includes the following:
- Establishing the parameters of what needs to be done for the migrations using the guidance available here.
- Setting up versions of the PUBS database in DEV, TEST and LIVE that will replace those on the old infrastructure.
- Undertaking any relevant testing on the DEV version.
- Carrying out user testing on the TEST version to ensure the test versions of the related applications can access the migrated database
- Resolving any problems reported during user testing
- Deploying the migrated version to LIVE
- Updating the TAD and any other relevant documentation
No changes that would affect the functionality of the database or related applications will be made. The decommissioning of older versions of migrated databases has not been included in the scope of migration projects so far but should be considered as far as possible, within the time & cost limits of the project.
Objectives
- To move all PUBS Database environments to the new Database tier to deliver a more stable, better performing, feature-rich and supported infrastructure for all applications utilised by Records Management Section.
- To update supporting technical documentation for the migrated databases & related applications.
Deliverables
The deliverables for the project are:
- A migrated version of the PUBS database in DEV, TEST and LIVE
- Updated technical and support documentation
Benefits
The benefits below will be realised once the PUBS database is made live in the new infrastructure:
- The cost to the university will be reduced due to theincreased reliability and minimal support time.
- Customer experience will be improved due to higher security level and reduced loss of service.
- Patching and proactive management will be streamlined.
Success Criteria
- Underlying PUBS databases are migrated to the new Oracle database tier with minimal impact to the operations.
- PUBS databases continue to function as normal using the new database tier.
- Service levels of applications using PUBS LIVE are maintained or improved.
- Any existing BOXI reporting continues to function as normal.
