Decommissioning Begins
Over the past two years, the MVM002 project has been migrating all MVM websites and applications - including eeMec, eeVec, OSCA and - from the old servers in Hugh Robson to the IS infrastructure. This process is now completing.
From today, the project team will begin to switch off the MVM applications servers in the Hugh Robson building, with the intention of requesting complete decommissioning and removal of servers towards the end of this month.
Paul Clark, the project sponsor, thanks all the project team for the work to get us to this point.
This project was the first project we initiated to help reduce risk for the College, and move towards centralised, “data centre” standard platforms to reduce costs and risk. The project has taken 2 years, and is a fantastic example of the hard work and effort that has been required to put the College in a position where we can move forward. This is a critical piece of work which Paul references to senior management within the College on a regular basis, to highlight the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and the day to day work we must complete to ensure that our systems and services can continue to run. Given that the tangible costs and resource costs for this project will likely stray into 6 figures, it shows how much money and effort is required to run bespoke platforms.
In addition, we have a fully supported infrastructure in line with other services supported by IS Applications, USD and LTW.
Paul thanks everyone involved in helping getting the College to a more stable platform, allowing us to strategically look forward and invest time and effort in adopting central support systems where appropriate, knowing that our services are on industry standard data centre technologies.
