Lead School - School of Engineering
The MOOC will cement the University’s position to stay ahead as a leading centre of excellence in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) by accelerating the internationalision of the strong teaching and research undertaken in the Schools of Engineering and Geosciences.
The world’s first MOOC in CCS will complement the existing offering in the field of renewable energy by targeting a global audience of non-specialists with an interest in energy and climate change mitigation, in particular in the USA, China, Mexico, Canada, Norway and Australia where the first industrial plants are located. Because of the association of CCS with fossil fuels, there is a need for public outreach and knowledge dissemination with evidence-based material to depoliticise and take unnecessary controversy out of the energy debate and the role of CCS.
The University of Edinburgh has become a nationally and internationally leading centre of excellence in the area of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). It has received in excess of £20M of research funding since 2010 and developed a strong connection to teaching at undergraduate level and the world’s first dedicated MSc programme in Geosciences.
The MOOC will support applications into the UK Prosperity fund and other new international initiatives, and will act as a platform for advertising and recruitment for the MSc. The material is highly multidisciplinary and provide a base entry level across all disciplines. We target students and professionals in the field of energy in both the public and the private sectors, e.g. civil service, NGOs, electricity and oil and gas industry.
