Project Summary
LILEE – The Little Interface for Lab Equipment Efficiency – is low-cost, networked, smart device for the efficient management of lab equipment. It is an outcome of a the Enhance project - a two-year long collaboration with staff at the Roslin Institute to co-design an innovation for behaviour-based energy saving. Eight LILEE devices are currently installed in the Roslin Institute. These devices have provided estimated energy savings of 20-30%, and have received a positive response from staff regarding the improvement of lab working practices.
This project aims to achieve wider-scale deployment of up to 50 LILEE devices across the University estate, and to establish the necessary infrastructure to provide continued support for LILEE as part of the IoT Service. The project has received additional financial support (4k) from the Sustainable Campus Fund.
Project Scope
Objective: Establish CO2 monitoring facility in Argyle House.

Not in scope:
The project scope does not include development of LILEE for use outside the University of Edinburgh.
Benefits
The project is expected to deliver various benefits to stakeholders, as defined below.
IoT Service: the project will provide an opportunity for the IoT service to gain experience of developing, delivering and supporting an innovative, in-house IoT solution. It will also serve to promote the work of the IoT service, and provide an example of how research innovations can be supported and developed beyond the lifetime of research projects.
Student interns: the students working on this project will be given valuable experience of IoT software development and service delivery.
LILEE users: staff using the LILEE system should benefit from the services it provides – enabling them to better manage lab equipment usage and sharing.
Estates/SRS: the department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS) should see benefits from this project in terms of meeting their goals to reduce carbon emissions across the University, since LILEE facilitates more efficient energy use in labs. This will also result in financial savings for Estates.
Budget
All effort provided by IoT Service team and EPSRC.
Equipment budget (£4k) provided by SRS (Estates).
Dependencies
Provision of VMs from ISG Enterprise Services.
Risks
- Supply of hardware components may be delayed. As we have a limited window for student resource to build devices, this delay may require additional spend on resource to complete the work – Medium
- There may be insufficient labs willing to take up the LILEE system and this could cause issues with planned further deployment - Medium
- Personal data in the form of UUNs are captured and stored so there is a risk to personal privacy. A PIA will be undertaken and required actions identified from the PIA will be implemented - Low
- There may be security issues within the LILEE software – this will be reviewed and addressed - Low
