Background

Architecture DataCenter consists of eight VMware ESX hosts. Next year these will be reaching end of life. In order to save replacement costs it is planned to move the Virtual Machines into the IS Hosting Datacenter.

Scope

Migrate virtual machines onto IS Virtual Hosting Infrastructure

Objectives

Migrate all live VMs

To close down and retire eight ESX hosts

Free up VMware and Windows licences

Deliverables

All VM's migrated.

Cost savings in respect of not renewing physical server hardware

Cost savings by reducing the amount of VMware licences

Cost savings by reducing the number of Windows Datacenter and External Connector licences used by the ESX hosts that will be retired

Return of Dell Compelent Storage to the pool

Reduce infrastructure management overheads

Migrated VMs will be run under Enterprise Plus licences and take advantage of the benefits

Free up rack space in datacenter

Reduce overall power consumption
