Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Overall Programme RAG: GREEN

The programme returns after an haitus during 13/14, with a large number of ('Apps') projects reflecting the activity and expectations being generated in the TEL area. This is reflected in the Assessment projects planned, and the enhancements to analytics planned. Of course, regular upgrades and replacement of our key services ensure we keep delivering richer functionalty and improved performance to our users.

Amongst its challenges and opportunites, there is the new LTW division which includes the previous USD and Apps TEL teams, and changes in the way of working and relationships with rest of IS which that will bring. So an exciting time.

All projects have started on the planned date, so majority and prioritised projects are under way. Some concerns at pace of TEL018, given the need to meet a specific widow for delivery but project brief now in and team expected to be fully on the project through to completion.

The programme has to deal with some unplanned carry over from 13/14, but at present the overall estimate for the programme is just a handful of days and this is a tiny percentage of the programme budget and there is plenty contigency to cover, so not a concern at this stage.

Programme Manager would set status of programme as Green despite the above issues, as confident that issues will be resolved in November.

Working with APPS
Moodle Upgrade

Planned annual upgrade of Moodle VLE platform. We should be looking at a yearly upgrade but jumping 2 versions at a time (upgrading in June/July each year).  The exact version each year will be dependent on our plugins and how quickly they can be tested/redeveloped by non-Moodle HQ developers. At present we expect to deploy in July the version that comes out in the December previous

Online Assesment Evaluations

The development of pilot projects exploring the use of technologies and  functionality for innovative assessment and feedback practice. Focus will be on evaluating opportunities and challenges for integration with existing systems, best match with pedagogic requirements, adaptability and scalability. We anticipate that the technologies explored will be a mix of hosted (cloud-based) and installed here.  Schools and courses with a history of innovative approaches to assessment will be identified and invited to develop these pilots.

Three separate projects are expected :- Adaptive Learing - Started as TEL014 Map My Programme Feedback Analytics Capture Systems

TELS Management Information

This project will deliver a management information reporting solution that Schools and IS can use to understand the breadth and depth of engagement with IS Technology Enhanced Learning Services. It will be possible to see the picture at individual School level, at College level, or for the institution as a whole.

RED

Report by Colin Forrest for October 2014

Report Date:
 October 2014

Achievements in the last period

  • Status checks have been deployed to DEV and TEST.
  • DEV has been reverted back to match TEST and LIVE in structure after our proposed developments were deemed unsuitable for the Learn System.

Issues

  • LIVE db has a different naming convention to DEV and TEST.  As we are hard coding the configuration of our system checks a decision will need to be made about taking the db naming convention through to LIVE so we can configure the checks correctly. If it is to be taken through to LIVE then there will need to be a small amount of downtime for Learn. We could do this when the system next has a restart.

Next Steps

  • Deploy the checks into LIVE once the db naming convention position has been agreed.
  • Close the project.

Programme Manager : setting the project status to RED as we need more clarity on the milestones shown, and because the project has unplanned carry over that needs fudning.

 RED

Report by Colin Forrest for October 2014

Achievements in the last period

  • Project initiated, brief approved across all members of the project team, deliverables have been prioritised and booking for the mandatory work we will undertake first have been put in place.
  • Project scope has been clarified after a support call with QMP.  The hosted option has been discounted so we now push ahead with the mandatory on premises upgrade to version 5.7.
  • The planning will go through WIS in w/b 10th of November. Dev Tech will then lead the upgrade project through to pre-production.

Issues

  • We are aiming for a January deployment, but this is a tight schedule and will need careful monitoring.

Next Steps

  • Carry out the mandatory elements of the project.

Programme Manager : Setting status to RED due to the known delays to getting project under way and hgh risk of missing the delivery. Will review this month.
