Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Overall Programme RAG: AMBER

The programme returns after an haitus during 13/14, with a large number of ('Apps') projects reflecting the activity and expectations being generated in the TEL area. This is reflected in the Assessment projects planned, and the enhancements to analytics planned. Of course, regular upgrades and replacement of our key services ensure we keep delivering richer functionalty and improved performance to our users.

Amongst its challenges and opportunites, there is the new LTW division which includes the previous USD and Apps TEL teams, and changes in the way of working and relationships with rest of IS which that will bring. So an exciting time.

The programme has to deal with some unplanned carry over from 13/14, but as there is 30 days available for the implementation of PRS ('Clickers') which is unlikely to be needed, no significant risk at present. Decision on the Learn Automated is pending, and any further development would require unplanned budget.

Working with APPS
Moodle UpgradePlanned annual upgrade of Moodle VLE platform. We should be looking at a yearly upgrade but jumping 2 versions at a time (upgrading in June/July each year).  The exact version each year will be dependent on our plugins and how quickly they can be tested/redeveloped by non-Moodle HQ developers. At present we expect to deploy in July the version that comes out in the December previous
QMP Upgrade

Upgrade of Questionmark Perception, from version 5.2, to version 5.4.

Appraisal of QMP cloud based tools will be included.

The project has been initiated 3rd September, and is TEL018 with Colin Forrest as PM.

Online Assesment Evaluations

The development of pilot projects exploring the use of technologies and  functionality for innovative assessment and feedback practice. Focus will be on evaluating opportunities and challenges for integration with existing systems, best match with pedagogic requirements, adaptability and scalability. We anticipate that the technologies explored will be a mix of hosted (cloud-based) and installed here.  Schools and courses with a history of innovative approaches to assessment will be identified and invited to develop these pilots.

Three separate projects are expected :- Adaptive Learing - Started as TEL014 Map My Programme Feedback Analytics Capture Systems

TELS Management Information

This project will deliver a management information reporting solution that Schools and IS can use to understand the breadth and depth of engagement with IS Technology Enhanced Learning Services. It will be possible to see the picture at individual School level, at College level, or for the institution as a whole.

Report by Colin Forrest for August 2014

Achievements in the last period

  • The suspension options for this project have been outlined and are with Service Management for a decision.
  • The service checks can be updated to the TEST and LIVE environments.  This can be done through a Linux menu on the Witness Server or we can establish the Witness Server Web Interface (already developed) to LIVE.

Issues

  • The project is currently suspended due to the NAS infrastructure not being suitable for the Learn application.
  • Any days in 14/15 are Unplanned, so they may influence the decision by business as to preferred next steps

Next steps

  • Carry out any small pieces of work that will take our useful developments through TEST and LIVE.

Maurice Franceschi : status is RED  given the significant issues that led to suspension and because any further work on this project is unplanned impacts on the planned projects.
