Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Overall Programme RAG: AMBER

The programme is on course to deliver most of the projects on budget and within the year but TEL011 PRS and TEL013 learn Failover projects will carry over into 14/15.

It is hoped that the impact of the 14/15 budget will be offset by the fact that 30 days have been allocated for Implementation of the PRS system, and this may turn out to be much less as the decision is for a virtual, wireless system without the need for local infrastructure changes.

Working with APPS
Moodle UpgradePlanned annual upgrade of Moodle VLE platform. We should be looking at a yearly upgrade but jumping 2 versions at a time (upgrading in June/July each year).  The exact version each year will be dependent on our plugins and how quickly they can be tested/redeveloped by non-Moodle HQ developers. At present we expect to deploy in July the version that comes out in the December previous
QMP Upgrade

Upgrade of Questionmark Perception, from version 5.2, to version 5.4.

Appraisal of QMP cloud based tools will be included.

Next Generation Personal Response System (Implementation)Continutation of current Project TEL011, procurement of a PRS.
VLE Student AnalyticsThis project will develop Learn Building Blocks and Moodle plugins to display information about student activity within the VLEs. Students will see views of their activity/performance relative to their peers in an anonymous fashion. Staff will be able to see a fuller picture of all activity for all students in a course with comparative/relative measures.
Online Assesment Evaluations

The development of pilot projects exploring the use of technologies and  functionality for innovative assessment and feedback practice. Focus will be on evaluating opportunities and challenges for integration with existing systems, best match with pedagogic requirements, adaptability and scalability. We anticipate that the technologies explored will be a mix of hosted (cloud-based) and installed here.  Schools and courses with a history of innovative approaches to assessment will be identified and invited to develop these pilots.

Three separate projects are expected :- Adaptive Learing Map My Programme Feedback Analytics Capture Systems

TELS Management Information

This project will deliver a management information reporting solution that Schools and IS can use to understand the breadth and depth of engagement with IS Technology Enhanced Learning Services. It will be possible to see the picture at individual School level, at College level, or for the institution as a whole.

Report by Colin Forrest for July 2014

Achievements in Last Period

  • Not applicable as the project has had to be suspended due to the app's incompatibility with the infrastructure.

Issues

  • We were developing the resilient fileshare on the NAS infrastructure.  We had a message from ITI that the NAS was not designed for such apps which came to the project on the 25th of July: "...some services that Apps want to put onto the infrastructure will exercise the infrastructure in a way that we didn’t design it to be used. This could manifest itself in an overloaded backend infrastructure and poor/unreliable performance for the VLE & other users of the service."
  • A unanimous decision was made to suspend the project in light of this information.

Next steps

  • Audit the useful work we have done and estimate the effort required to get it into service.
  • Suspend the project.
