Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Overall Programme RAG: AMBER

The programme is on course to deliver most of the projects on budget and within the year but TEL011 PRS project will carry over into 14/15.

It is hoped that the impact of the 14/15 budget will be offset by the fact that 30 days have been allocated for Implementation of the PRS system, and this may turn out to be much less as the decision is for a virtual, wireless system without the need for local infrastructure changes.

Working with APPS
Moodle UpgradePlanned annual upgrade of Moodle VLE platform. We should be looking at a yearly upgrade but jumping 2 versions at a time (upgrading in June/July each year).  The exact version each year will be dependent on our plugins and how quickly they can be tested/redeveloped by non-Moodle HQ developers. At present we expect to deploy in July the version that comes out in the December previous
QMP Upgrade

Upgrade of Questionmark Perception, from version 5.2, to version 5.4.

Appraisal of QMP cloud based tools will be included.

Next Generation Personal Response System (Implementation)Continutation of current Project TEL011, procurement of a PRS.
VLE Student AnalyticsThis project will develop Learn Building Blocks and Moodle plugins to display information about student activity within the VLEs. Students will see views of their activity/performance relative to their peers in an anonymous fashion. Staff will be able to see a fuller picture of all activity for all students in a course with comparative/relative measures.
Online Assesment Evaluations

The development of pilot projects exploring the use of technologies and  functionality for innovative assessment and feedback practice. Focus will be on evaluating opportunities and challenges for integration with existing systems, best match with pedagogic requirements, adaptability and scalability. We anticipate that the technologies explored will be a mix of hosted (cloud-based) and installed here.  Schools and courses with a history of innovative approaches to assessment will be identified and invited to develop these pilots.

Three separate projects are expected :- Adaptive Learing Map My Programme Feedback Analytics Capture Systems

TELS Management Information

This project will deliver a management information reporting solution that Schools and IS can use to understand the breadth and depth of engagement with IS Technology Enhanced Learning Services. It will be possible to see the picture at individual School level, at College level, or for the institution as a whole.

Also note there are two other projects of interest to TELMultimedia procurement and Multilemedia Implementation - Major Proejcts being delviered by the separate Multimedia Programme, but which will be TEL services once delivered.

Achievements in Last Period

  • The project has progressed to the Acceptance stage and at our acceptance meeting all areas of the upgrade passed muster with all stakeholders other than one issue with the TEST area.

Issues

  • The issue with the test area is yet to be fully bottomed out.  Initial investigations have shown that it may not be a code issue with the Moodle System other than the expected slowdown documented with the 2.6 system.  There is a disparity between the KB and AT sides of the TEST infrastructure when we’ve done initial load tests with one side performing at exactly half the speed of the other side.  We are monitoring the issue through a JIRA and subsequently a support call to ITI (I140708-0881).

Next Steps

  • Resolve the one issue and then deploy the system to LIVE.

Report by Colin Forrest for June 2014

Achievements in Last Period

  • The system has been integrated into TEST and the some integration rework was done.  The expanded Card System is now at the UAT stage.
  • With this the relevant persons have been setup by Student Systems and testing of the UAT is due to begin on the week of this report. The testing will take multiple days as the test persons are allowed to progress through the relevant systems as they would normally.

Issues

  • Integration rework has caused a short delay in the start of the UAT as has the patching done to the TEST DB layer on the 8th of July and the subsequent failure of the EUGEX to IDM connector to run since.  This however does not materially impact the project schedule as we are due to deploy in October.

Next Steps

  • Finish the UAT and complete the ASOR.  Then the project will go into hiatus until peak period for Card is over in October.
