Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Additional budget has been found to allow the programme to fnd the Business Data Recovery proposal.

The projected total for the year has the programme running over by 13 days, but 10 of these are held in the balance row as contingency so we are still able to work towards a balanced budget.

AP34-041 Business Data Recovery and Storage Implementation

https://www.projects.ed.ac.uk/planning/project/140

This proposal will implement the findings of the review of data recovery and storage requirements for IS Applications as part of a wider review by ITI. The review will have outlined the requirements for storage of business data for disaster recovery/backup, archival and replication purposes. The necessary technical infrastructure will have been provisioned during 12/13 period as a result of the review and this proposal will bring the Applications service under the revised process and facilities.

Tony Weir will be developing the brief. The work is temporarily on hold due to conflicts with other priority work, but Tony has confirmed that it will happen in first half of 2014, and that it will be a procurement followed by an installation. The IS Apps effort involved for each project needs re-estimated. Currently this is a Small budget proposal.

Report completed by Stevie Conlon for December 2013

Achievements This Period

  • APPS and NEWS Dev instances migrated to the new architecture . NEWS has been tested and signed off.
  • UCD is the favoured name for the new database instance and will contain BOXICMS, DIRECT and Calum McLean.
  • The planning milestones for each database have now been split out for each database to allow clearer project reporting.
  • An investigation was completed by Development into the feasibility of rewriting CRON jobs as part of the migration but the recommendation was that there were no quick fixes and it would be better to carry out any changes as a separate task.

Issues

  • A new project will be tasked with enhancing the performance of the SMART application, including moving the schema to the new database infrastructure. The SMART schema is currently in the APPS database which is being moved to the new DB infrastructure in March as part of the ITS103 project.  The enhancements to SMART are required before ITS103 delivers in March. It is proposed that the SMART enhancements project take over the tasks of creating the new database instances , currently code named UCD ,for DEV , TEST and LIVE and move the SMART schema in to the new instance from APPS to allow the SMART project to progress without any conflict or delay from ITS103. The ITS103 project will then migrate the schemas into UCD, namely Calum McLean, BOXICMS and DIRECT as previously planned. This will affect the planning and timescales budgets.

Next Steps

  • Continue to communicate with all user groups around dates for deployment.
  • Close off the APPS Dev environment.
  • Move the NEWS TEST environment to the new architecture.
  • Determine if any Development effort is required and estimate any impact on the project.
  • Work with the SACS PM, Franck Bergeret to determine scope, budget and timescales of the SMART enhancement project .

Development Tool Upgrades

Withdrawn on 30/8/13.

https://www.projects.ed.ac.uk/planning/project/141

This was due to impact on programme budget from carry over 12/13 projects.

However, we hope to be able to bring the project back into the 13/14 programme if budget, priority and new estimates allow.

The Division has built up reliance on a number of key products over the years to assist in project and service delivery.

This project would apply relevant upgrades to the following products:

JIRA

JIRA has fallen a few version behind latest version, so it may be this upgrade is required. Whether a proejct is required remain to be re-assessed.

Greenhopper

This is a small task to be done under APP004

Bamboo

This is a small task that should be covered by current Support arrangements.
