Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Two further projects delivered and closed in the last month, and one more due to complete this next period.

This wil leave only the ITS103 Core Technology Updates project carrying into 2014, currently within budget but needing a re-planning and new milestones stated.

The Business Data Recover project remains as planned, but at present cannot start due to lack of budget.

AP34-041 Business Data Recovery and Storage Implementation

https://www.projects.ed.ac.uk/planning/project/140

This proposal will implement the findings of the review of data recovery and storage requirements for IS Applications as part of a wider review by ITI. The review will have outlined the requirements for storage of business data for disaster recovery/backup, archival and replication purposes. The necessary technical infrastructure will have been provisioned during 12/13 period as a result of the review and this proposal will bring the Applications service under the revised process and facilities.

Tony Weir will be developing the brief. The work is temporarily on hold due to conflicts with other priority work, but Tony has confirmed that it will happen in first half of 2014, and that it will be a procurement followed by an installation. The IS Apps effort involved for each project needs re-estimated. Currently this is a Small budget proposal.

Status is RED as there is in sufficient programme budget to fund this proejct.

Report completed by Stevie Conlon for November 2013

Achievements This Period

  • MISLIVE investigations completed. Two schemas identified as still being live and in use BOXICMS and DIRECT.
  • APPS investigation in progress and Dev Tech preparation work ready for migration of DEV instance.
  • NEWS investigations complete and Dev Tech preparation work before migration of DEV instance complete.
  • A meeting was held with Iain Fiddes and Heather Larnach and agreement reached between Dev Tech and Tech Management to create a new database repository and not to add any more schemas to APPS .
  • The issues around Infinite potentially requiring specialist testing has been resolved. It is not required.

Issues

  •  Decisions to be made on the name and content of the new database and the timing of the move.
  • The migrations may now need some development involvement where Java connectors are involved.
  • The ECA Mini Portfolio Application (on APPS) has a busy Production period in January through to Mid February. This may impact the project timescales if agreement cannot be reached to allow downtime for the upgrade.
  • Replannning around database moves are necessary and the milestones for Dev ASOR deployment to TEST etc..  will be split out to identify which database is being actioned. This will allow , for example NEWS , to progress without waiting on any issues with APPS .

Next steps

  • Continue to communicate with all user groups around dates for deployment., specifically discuss with Lisa Dawson/Chris Burnett around ECA mini portfolio schedules.
  • Determine if any Development effort is required and estimate any impact on the project.
  • Migrate APPS and NEWS Dev instances.
  • Agree naming and content for new database instance.

The project is marked as RED as milestones will be separated out and planned for different databases.

Development Tool Upgrades

Withdrawn on 30/8/13.

https://www.projects.ed.ac.uk/planning/project/141

This was due to impact on programme budget from carry over 12/13 projects.

However, we hope to be able to bring the project back into the 13/14 programme if budget, priority and new estimates allow.

The Division has built up reliance on a number of key products over the years to assist in project and service delivery.

This project would apply relevant upgrades to the following products:

JIRA

JIRA has fallen a few version behind latest version, so it may be this upgrade is required. Whether a proejct is required remain to be re-assessed.

Greenhopper

This is a small task to be done under APP004

Bamboo

This is a small task that should be covered by current Support arrangements.
