Annual Moodle Upgrade (17/18)

Achievements this period

• Completed load testing
• Undertook full Disaster Recovery test
• Completed deployment checklists
• Deployed Moodle 3.4.3 to LIVE (10th July)

Issues

• A code error has been diagnosed with the Turnitin two plugin for Moodle in the LIVE environment, which has impacted the display of column data for markers on assignments.  DLAM have reported the issue to Turnitin and it is being investigated.  Once a resolution has been established, this will be implemented by the Moodle Service team after the project has closed.

• DLAM found a known issue in Moodle 3.4.3 which accounts for a notifications error, which will be documented and be resolved by Moodle Service team (there is a fix available in Moodle 3.4.4).  The error has a workaround but impacts user experience.

• DLAM cannot run TELSMI extract in LIVE environment - Apps Management will investigate and resolve.

All the above issues agreed by DLAM to be picked up by Service so aren't required to be resolved within the project

Achievements in Last Period

• Second attempt at the Test install started on 8 June but is still not complete – see issues
• As deployment was missed LTW have agreed that we deploy in the next non-teaching period which is Xmas 18 (see piccl 10). They are consulting their user base to agree a date in December. PM informed LTW that Production advises that there will be no deployments the week before we break up for Xmas (this year week beginning 17 December)
• Revised milestones and carry over of 26 days to 18/19 approved by WIS 27 July (piccl 11)

Issues

• We missed deployment date due to a misunderstanding of the QMP documentation. This has meant that a secondary load balancer has to be created and as we cannot get priority within ITI we just have to wait on them coming back to us to say it is built. We therefore cannot re-plan the project properly at this point – everything has to be an estimate (a toned down piccl 11 refers)

Next Steps

• ITI to complete the build of the secondary load balancer (requested 10 July 18)
• QMP to complete TEST install and complete migrations
• TEST signoff (31 August) – LTW staff on leave and have asked for this date for TEST signofff
• LTW documentation tasks to start when TEST signed off

RAG COMMENTARY

There has been more slippage in delivering TEST. Due to a misinterpretation of QMP documentation, we now require a secondary load balancer entry to be created. This is with ITI currently (requested 10 July but not delivered yet). Because of the delays to complete TEST install we have missed the deployment date of 16 July. We have now agreed a deployment at the next non-teaching slot which is Xmas 18 but project remains at RED until we are sure TEST can be completed  in August and can supply a re-plan (all dates are currently estimated).

• Rolled back to CU2 and after testing was able to  bring RAG down to AMBER as agreed  - see risk 1
• Deployed successfully on 17 July with CU2  - Comms on issues sent out by Steph - RAG now GREEN
• Deployment review held 31 July 18
• Project closure approved by project team 31 July 18
• Closure approved by WIS 3 August 18

Issues

• Same issue deploying to LIVE as issue on deploying to TEST - Nik rebuilt servers and brought them into same firewall as other servers
